Managing high cholesterol"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cholesterol&nbsp;\u2013 The next of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my17.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/05\/the-3highs-is-not-a-death-sentence\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/my17.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/05\/the-3highs-is-not-a-death-sentence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3 highs<\/a>&nbsp;that my cousin Dr Wu and I will be discussing.  She had set the scene for us at the end of her article&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/drwu-lifeafter50.blogspot.com\/2021\/06\/cholesterol-good-and-bad.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cholesterol \u2013 the good and the bad <\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<strong><em>What can we do?<\/em><\/strong> \u201cNow that I have confused everyone with all the alphabet soup, let me confuse you more with what we can eat!&nbsp;We used to say eating fatty foods is bad, to avoid oil, red meat, eggs, shellfish and so on. Although we haven\u2019t really completely turned a 180, it is now OK to eat eggs, shellfish and butter! This part is where my cousin,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/my17.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charmain dietitian<\/a>&nbsp;can help and clarify.\u201d&nbsp; So here we go.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, as Wu said  the recommendation for treatment and the diet has changed so much from ten years ago!  Remember how much we were worried about egg yolks back then?!   It took ages to convince people eggs are ok.   By the way, I had addressed &#8220;egg&#8221; in my previous post&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/my17.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/11\/i-have-high-cholesterol-can-i-have-muffins\/\" target=\"_blank\">I have high cholesterol, can I have muffins?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the recent&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/news\/primary-care\/20210608\/nutritionally-rich-plantbased-diet-lowers-cvd-risk\" target=\"_blank\">Nutrition Live Online June 2021<\/a>, Choi and Jacobs reported that a \u201cnutritionally rich\u201d plant-based diet was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease among adults, but a diet of mostly low fat foods was&nbsp;<strong>not!&nbsp;<\/strong> So shall we put these no fat, low fat issues to the last  and let&#8217;s focus our attention on a plant-based diet first?  And let&#8217;s see how your current plate compares to the plate below?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"MyPlate\">Your Plate matters!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Food Guide<\/a> has illustrated very well on how we should balance our plate.&nbsp; How does this compare to yours?  In the right proportion? Start simple! <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>??Eat plenty of vegetable and fruits.  Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables.  That goes in line with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/my17.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/12\/managing-hypertension-nutrition-and-lifestyle\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/my17.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/12\/managing-hypertension-nutrition-and-lifestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\">managing hypertension<\/a> .  For optimal health, have them in rainbow colors to assure you get a wide spectrum of nutrients. <ul><li>Veggies: Vary your veggies. They can be fresh, frozen and canned.  <\/li><li>Fruits: Focus on whole fruits! <\/li><li>Tips: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/healthy-eating-recommendations\/make-it-a-habit-to-eat-vegetables-fruit-whole-grains-and-protein-foods\/eat-vegetables-and-fruits\/#section-4\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/healthy-eating-recommendations\/make-it-a-habit-to-eat-vegetables-fruit-whole-grains-and-protein-foods\/eat-vegetables-and-fruits\/#section-4\" target=\"_blank\">How to eat more vegetables.<\/a>  <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>?Choose whole grains foods.  Note that &#8220;whole wheat&#8221; &#8220;multi-grain&#8221; foods may not be whole grain and some foods may look like whole grain because of their color.   So it&#8217;s important to read the ingredient list and use the nutrition facts table to compare the amount between products.  Choose ones with more fiber.    <ul><li>Make half your grains whole grains.  Oats,  red rice, black rice, wild rice, brown rice, whole wheat, wheat berries like farro and spelt, quinoa, millet, cornmeal. <\/li><li>Tips: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/healthy-eating-recommendations\/make-it-a-habit-to-eat-vegetables-fruit-whole-grains-and-protein-foods\/eat-whole-grain-foods\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/healthy-eating-recommendations\/make-it-a-habit-to-eat-vegetables-fruit-whole-grains-and-protein-foods\/eat-whole-grain-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to include whole grain<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>?Eat protein foods.  Vary your protein routine.  Include foods such as:<ul><li>Plant-based:  Beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, seeds, nut butter. <em><strong>Choose protein foods that come from plants more often.<\/strong><\/em>  (More below.)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Lean cuts of meats and poultry (pork loin, sirloin steak, chicken breast, lean ground poultry),<\/li><li>Fish and seafood:  Eat two portions of fish or seafood per week, one of which should be oily fish such as herrings, mackerel, sardines, salmon).&nbsp;Shellfish such as shrimp, scallops.<\/li><li>Eggs.  <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tips:  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/healthy-eating-recommendations\/make-it-a-habit-to-eat-vegetables-fruit-whole-grains-and-protein-foods\/eat-protein-foods\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/healthy-eating-recommendations\/make-it-a-habit-to-eat-vegetables-fruit-whole-grains-and-protein-foods\/eat-protein-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\">Choosing and preparing healthy protein foods<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Dairy:  Milk, plain natural yogurt, fortified soy milk. <\/li><li>Choose healthy fats instead. <ul><li>Vegetable oils such as olive, canola (rapeseed), peanut, sunflower and safflower oils.<\/li><li>Avocados and nuts. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Make water your drink choice.  You can add fruits and herbs to flavour.   <\/li><li>Limit: Foods and beverages with added sugar, saturated fat and sodium. Develop a <strong>healthy eating pattern <\/strong>to maintain your health.  The benefits add up over time, bite by bite.  It is important at <strong>every stage of life.<\/strong>  <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where am I leading you to?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you start shaping your plate as above, you will be increasing nutrient-dense food which provides vitamins, minerals and other health-promoting components and have no or little added sugars, saturated fat and sodium in your diet.  You will then be decreasing intake of meat high in saturated fat (high fat cuts of meat), processed meats (hot dogs, sausages, luncheon meats) and processed snacks with hidden fats (chips, biscuits, crackers, muffins, pastries)  &#8211; ones that raising your bad cholesterol (LDL). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in order to decrease LDL, try shifting intakes towards more plant-based foods and replacing foods containing saturated fat with unsaturated fat.  <strong>The intention is not to reduce total fat in the diet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips on starting plant-based diet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Try planning a couple of meatless meals each week.  Heard of Meatless Monday? Green Monday?   That&#8217;s a good way to start.<\/li><li>Substitute animal protein with vegetable protein.<ul><li>Vegetable proteins: <ul><li>beans: Black beans, kidney beans, azuki (red beans), monk beans; <\/li><li>peas: Chickpeas, split peas; <\/li><li>lentils: Brown, green or red lentils.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Nuts (30 gram per day): Peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, cashews. <\/li><li>Nut butters. <\/li><li>Seeds: flaxseed (linseed), sunflower seeds, sesame<\/li><li>Soy: tofu, soybeans, edamame, natty, miso<\/li><li>Fortified soy beverages<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>For example, spaghetti bolognese, try giving it a twist by adding lentils.  Recipe: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heartfoundation.org.nz\/wellbeing\/healthy-recipes\/beef-and-lentil-bolognese\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.heartfoundation.org.nz\/wellbeing\/healthy-recipes\/beef-and-lentil-bolognese\" target=\"_blank\">Beef and lentil bolognese.  <\/a> Then step up to 100% plant based recipe: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbcgoodfood.com\/recipes\/lentil-ragu\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bbcgoodfood.com\/recipes\/lentil-ragu\" target=\"_blank\">Lentil Ragu<\/a> ? How about bean-based chili using tofu and veggies? <\/li><li>Search and compare recipes online, choose the one that uses more healthy and natural ingredients,  yet don&#8217;t compromise the taste.  <\/li><li>How about veggies burger? Though I&#8217;m not a vegan or vegetarian, very often, I&#8217;ll order veggies burger and chickpeas currie. (Ask me which margarine contains plant sterol).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So what about butter and margarine?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you start following the plant-based diet, you will naturally cut down on foods from animal origin which are naturally higher in fat and saturated fat. But occasionally if you want to use butter in baking\/cooking to improve the recipe, go ahead.  Or there&#8217;s plant based butter as an option.   The margarine that we used to worry about has been reformulated, partially hydrogenated oil has been banned, so there&#8217;s no more trans fat issue in margarine. Enjoy fish and seafood twice a week, one of which should be oily fish.  Trout, salmon, mackerel, shrimp, scallops are heart-friendly seafoods.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cooking Methods Matters!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-e627c90e-388c-454b-b7cb-7e89255d14e9\"><li>trimming the visible fat from meats; removing skin from poultry before cooking;<\/li><li>using small amounts of oils with&nbsp;healthy fats&nbsp;such as olive and canola<\/li><li>baking, grilling, roasting, poaching<\/li><li>draining off extra fat after cooking; limiting the amount of sauces, butter or gravy<\/li><li>seasoning with herbs, lemon or salsas<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We have covered a lot of information so far, try to pick a few tips and give it a try. Stay tuned. <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Fat 101<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One gram of fat = 9 calories regardless of what type of fat.  <\/li><li>One gram of carb = 4 calories<\/li><li>One gram of protein = 4 calories<\/li><li>Fats are very caloric-dense so watch out if you need to control your weight. <\/li><li>Total fat includes saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and trans fat.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saturated fats<\/strong> &#8211; solid at room temperature like a stick of butter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Saturated fats<\/td><td>Raise your cholesterol. <br>Animal foods, such as milk, cheese, and meat. <br>Tropical oils, such as coconut oil, palm oil, and cocoa butter. <br>Foods made with butter, margarine, or shortening (cakes, cookies, and other desserts) have a lot of saturated fat.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Trans fat <\/td><td>Raise your cholesterol.<br>Partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) &#8211; banned in most of the countries.<br>&nbsp;Some animal-based foods have small amounts of naturally occurring trans fats.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unsaturated Fats<\/strong> &#8211; Liquid at room temperature like vegetable oils. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Monounsaturated fats<\/td><td>Lower LDL and keep HDL high.  <br>Avocado, nuts, and vegetable oils, such as canola (rapeseed), olive, and peanut oils.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><br>Polyunsaturated fats <br><\/td><td>Eating polyunsaturated fat in place of saturated fat lower LDL.<br>There are two types of polyunsaturated fats. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Omega-3 fatty acids<\/td><td>Vegetable oils: soybean oil, canola oil (rapeseed oil). <br>Fatty fish and shellfish:  Salmon, anchovies, herring, sardines, Pacific oysters, trout, Atlantic mackerel, and Pacific mackerel are high in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthlinkbc.ca\/health-topics\/tn6745spec#tp22226\">lower in mercury<\/a>.<br>Nuts and seeds: flaxseed (linseed), chia seeds, and walnuts.<br>Fortified foods: certain brands of eggs, yogurt, juices, milk, soy beverages, and&nbsp;spreads.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Omega-6 fatty acids<\/td><td>Mostly in liquid vegetable oils like soybean oil, corn oil, and safflower oil.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Both &#8220;good&#8221; cholesterol (HDL) and &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol (LDL) are found in your blood.<\/p><p><em>HDL- high density lipoprotein, the &#8220;good&#8221; cholesterol that picks up the excess cholesterol from the arteries to the liver for disposal, thus lower our risk of heart disease.  <\/em><\/p><p><em>LDL &#8211; low density lipoprotein, the &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol, can lead to plaque buildup in blood vessels.  Plaque clogs blood vessels, reducing oxygen blood flow causing atherosclerosis.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><p>Too much LDL or too little HDL increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as heart attack or stroke. You want the bad LDL to be low and the good HDL to be high to reduce your risk for CVD!<\/p><p>Both trans fat and saturated fat can raise the levels of LDL in the blood, and can also lower the levels of HDL. <\/p><p>Replacing foods higher in saturated and trans fat with foods higher in unsaturated fat will help lower LDL. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Healthy eating pattern will provide positive health effect and can improve your cardiovascular health.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"571\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/my17.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-11-at-11.13.27-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.my17.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-11-at-11.13.27-PM.png 571w, https:\/\/www.my17.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-11-at-11.13.27-PM-250x300.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><figcaption>\u98df\u54c1\u6307\u5357  Chinese version <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If these still sound complicated to you, the easiest way is not to think about what you &#8220;should and should not have&#8221;. I encourage my clients not to go &#8220;on diet&#8221; as once &#8220;on&#8221;, it&#8217;s going to be &#8220;off&#8221; at some point &#8211;  we don&#8217;t want that to happen!
